Weight Loss Injection

Posted on:

We know there has been a lot of news about Mounjaro® for weight loss.

Mounjaro® (Tirzepatide) is a new medicine to help with weight.  The plan for how it is used in the NHS will happen slowly over 12 years.

Launch Delayed (continuing delay – August 2025)

The start date for GPs to begin prescribing Mounjaro® was meant to be 23 June 2025. But Frimley ICB has delayed the launch because some important things are not ready. We will tell you when it is ready in our area.

How it will work in GP surgeries:

  • People with the greatest health needs will get it first.
  • About 2,000 people across Frimley ICB will get it in total in the first three years.
    • There’s nearly 800,000 people living in Frimley ICB…
      • So in the first year, about 300 people in Frimley will be offered the injection.
  • Over the first three years, more and more people will be offered this support.
    • After three years, the NHS will check how well the plan has worked.
      • Then, they will decide which other patients can get the medicine.

Important things to know:

  • GPs can prescribe Mounjaro® only to suitable patients for weight loss.
  • GPs will review their list of patients to see who can get the medicine.
  • The medicine will be prescribed slowly, starting with those who need it most.
  • Patients must also get help with their lifestyle (like diet and exercise).
    • There is a service to support patients with this.

First group of patients (first 12 months):

  • Must have a BMI of 40 or more (this might be lower for some ethnic groups).
  • Must have four or more health problems linked to their weight.
    • Type 2 Diabetes
    • High blood pressure (hypertension)
    • Heart disease (including heart valve disease)
    • High cholesterol
    • Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (confirmed diagnosis)
